Our Story

A Vision Born from Personal Experience

Action for Community Transformation (ACT Buikwe) was born out of the personal journey of our co-founder, Emmanuel Sekitto. Reflecting on the challenges he faced during his childhood and youth, Emmanuel envisioned a future where children and families in Uganda could access the resources, education, and support necessary for a life of dignity and opportunity. His early experiences with hardship instilled in him a deep commitment to helping others overcome similar struggles, and he knew that sustainable change would require a focus on long-term empowerment rather than short-term aid.

Despite facing significant obstacles, Emmanuel’s resilience and determination led him to academic and professional success, fueling his passion to give back to his community. By transforming his own challenges into a platform for positive impact, he became a role model for many. His vision for ACT Buikwe reflects his belief that all individuals, regardless of their circumstances, have the potential to create meaningful change in their lives and communities. ACT Buikwe stands as a testament to Emmanuel’s journey and his commitment to breaking cycles of poverty and fostering resilience through education and community support.

The Founding of Buikwe Community Empowerment Center (2002)

In 2002, Emmanuel took the first steps toward realizing his vision by establishing the Buikwe Community Empowerment Center (BCEC). Recognizing the untapped potential within his community, he started with grassroots projects focused on agriculture and community development. The center became a place where local individuals could learn new skills, develop their livelihoods, and build a foundation for a more secure future. These agricultural and community-based initiatives empowered individuals to grow their own food, improve their economic stability, and work toward self-sufficiency.

Through BCEC, Emmanuel laid the groundwork for what would later evolve into ACT Buikwe, an organization dedicated to addressing the multifaceted needs of Uganda’s underserved populations. Over time, BCEC expanded beyond agriculture to include other developmental initiatives aimed at holistic community growth. This initial work helped build a network of local partnerships and foster a sense of unity and collaboration, which remain central to ACT Buikwe’s approach today. BCEC not only empowered individuals but also inspired a community-wide movement toward sustainable development and self-reliance.

A Journey of Service: 15 Years as a Teacher, Mentor, and Leader

Emmanuel’s commitment to community empowerment extends into his 15-year career as a high school teacher at Uganda’s prestigious St. Mary’s Kitende Secondary School. Here, he has not only taught but also mentored countless students, becoming a trusted guide in their academic, personal, and professional journeys. His role goes beyond traditional teaching, as he has focused on shaping his students' values and character, helping them to envision bright futures and make meaningful life choices. Emmanuel’s dedication has made him a cornerstone in the lives of his students and their families.

As the leader of the Student Patriotic Club and a respected counselor, Emmanuel’s influence has extended to hundreds of students, impacting lives both inside and outside the classroom. Through his mentorship, he has inspired many young people to pursue careers that contribute positively to society, fostering a spirit of responsibility and patriotism. His unique ability to connect with students and provide them with the tools to succeed has created a lasting legacy, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing future leaders and positively influencing Uganda’s next generation.

Expanding Horizons: Leadership and Global Partnerships

Emmanuel’s leadership journey has extended beyond the borders of Uganda. As a Reader for the Mandela Fellowship Program of the Young African Leaders Initiative, he plays a role in selecting and supporting emerging leaders across the African continent. This work allows Emmanuel to mentor young professionals, sharing his insights and helping to shape Africa’s future leadership. His involvement with the Mandela Fellowship underscores his dedication to fostering positive change beyond his immediate community and contributes to a continent-wide movement of young, impactful leaders.

Furthermore, Emmanuel collaborates as a Leadership Ambassador for the Franklyn Institute of Leadership, working with the American Center in Uganda. Through public management sessions and leadership development initiatives, he equips future leaders with the skills and knowledge necessary to make a difference. These partnerships introduce global perspectives and innovative strategies into ACT Buikwe’s approach, strengthening the organization’s ability to address Uganda’s challenges with fresh insights and diverse resources. Emmanuel’s international work has enriched ACT Buikwe’s programs, enabling the organization to deliver sustainable solutions informed by a wealth of experiences and expertise.

A Literary Contribution: Healing Together

In addition to his roles as an educator and leader, Emmanuel is currently authoring a book titled Healing Together, which will be published by Butler Mountain Press in North Carolina, USA, in Summer 2025. This book aims to provide a platform for teachers to share their stories, dreams, and experiences, giving a voice to educators who work tirelessly to shape young minds. Through Healing Together, Emmanuel hopes to capture the profound challenges and triumphs that teachers experience, highlighting the power of education to heal, inspire, and transform lives.

Healing Together is more than a collection of stories; it is a testament to the resilience and dedication of educators who impact their communities in lasting ways. By creating this platform, Emmanuel seeks to foster a deeper appreciation for the teaching profession and offer support to educators around the world who may face similar challenges. This book reflects his commitment to lifting up fellow teachers, celebrating their contributions, and creating a shared space for growth and encouragement. Emmanuel’s literary contribution promises to amplify the voices of teachers, honoring their role as essential pillars in the journey toward societal change.

From a Community Initiative to ACT Buikwe

What began as the Buikwe Community Empowerment Center has evolved into Action for Community Transformation, an organization that addresses the needs of Uganda’s vulnerable populations on a broader scale. Guided by Emmanuel’s values of inclusivity, resilience, and self-reliance, ACT Buikwe has grown to encompass multiple programs that support economic empowerment, education, financial inclusion, and community engagement. The transformation from BCEC to ACT Buikwe reflects the organization’s ability to adapt and expand to meet the diverse and changing needs of the communities it serves.

ACT Buikwe’s mission remains focused on creating sustainable solutions that empower individuals to improve their own lives and contribute to the growth of their communities. Today, ACT Buikwe works with local leaders, volunteers, and global partners to bring resources and opportunities to Uganda’s most underserved regions. Each project, program, and partnership is a step forward in Emmanuel’s vision of a Uganda where all people have the chance to build a brighter future for themselves and their families. ACT Buikwe’s evolution is a testament to the power of grassroots initiatives and the importance of adapting to meet community needs.
